5 Twisted New Horror Releases Streaming This March

The weather isn’t the only thing heating up this March. There are tons of new horror titles hitting the usual suspects this month. If you missed them in theaters, you can now watch them in the comfort of your own home. Are you a Shudder subscriber ready to see John Lithgow get weird in The Rule Of Jenny Pen, or watch Matt Smith get terrorized in Starve Acre? Or are you looking for a whole-season commitment like Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue on MGM+? Or maybe you want to see the new Nicole Kidman film fresh out of SXSW when Holland lands on Prime Video this month. If any of that sounds like you, odds are you will dig some of these other new releases hitting the streaming streets this month. Let’s dive in.

Bloody Axe Wound (dir. Matthew John Lawrence)

Where You Can Watch: Shudder

A teen is torn between her family’s morbid business and her crush. Will she follow in her father’s footsteps of recording real-life killings and selling them to customers? Or will she choose a different and less gruesome path? The critics have not been kind to Bloody Axe Wound, but I’m excited to see it for myself. Mostly, because the cast includes Molly Brown (Dexter: Original Sin), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead), and Sari Arambulo (A.P. Bio). So, if nothing else, it will be cool to see those actors play together. I love slashers, but I am still iffy with many horror comedies. So, I plan to make it a Shudder Saturday and see what happens. Worst case scenario, I can cross off another new movie from my neverending list.

Bloody Axe Wound arrives on Shudder on March 21.

Control Freak (dir. Shal Ngo)

Where You Can Watch: Hulu

A motivational speaker contracts a mysterious infection originating from her homeland. She then finds herself at the mercy of a parasitic creature who now controls her mind and body. The Control Freak poster is too much for me, but I will attempt to watch the movie anyway. Partly because the advertising has been haunting me, and I am nosey. However, I am also excited to see Kelly Marie Tran (The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker) lead a horror movie. As an intersectional horror girl, I’m always screaming for more women of color leads. So, I’ll take this parasite to the eye and itch for the rest of the year. Check it out and scratch yourselves for eternity with me.

Control Freak arrives on Hulu on March 13.

Heart Eyes (dir. Josh Ruben)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

For years, the Heart Eyes Killer has ruined Valentine’s Day by murdering couples. This year, two unsuspecting colleagues are mistaken as a couple and catch the attention of this deadly serial killer. Heart Eyes expertly balances heart, humor, and some of the sickest kills we have seen in a hot minute. It is the bloody and endearing treat none of us expected. Many people went to the theater to see Mason Gooding, Olivia Holt, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster continue building their horror legacies. However, they walked out obsessed with Gigi Zumbado and the warm and fuzzies because the film feels like a love letter to horror fans. I am obsessed with Heart Eyes and will have even more fun now that I can watch it at home in my pajamas with my own snacks.

Heart Eyes arrives on VOD on March 7.

Heretic (Scott Beck and Bryan Woods)

Where You Can Watch: Max

Two young Mormons find themselves in danger when they arrive at the house of a troubled old man. Heretic is tense and compelling. It also makes me want blueberry pie every time I think about it. The movie features some of the best performances of last year. So, the unholy trio of Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East definitely put this toward the top of my list of new releases to catch this month. The film landed Grant a few acting award nominations, so I doubt I will be the only person revisiting it this month on Max. This is a new release I can’t wait to see social media react to as it reaches a larger audience. It is such an unsettling and claustrophobic ride. I also think it’s Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ best film. However, I find mansplainers stressful and terrifying, so Mr. Reed upset me on sight.

Heretic arrives on Max on March 7.

Strange Darling (dir. J.T. Mollner)

Where You Can Watch: Paramount+ (with Showtime add-on)

A one-night stand takes a turn as would-be lovers become entangled in a serial killer’s murderous rampage. This movie was a beautifully shot and underscored mindfuck. It quickly became one of the most talked about thrillers of 2024, and I love to see it. Strange Darling also features some of the best performances of last year. While many of us are fans of Kyle Gallner, the film helped us get familiar with Willa Fitzgerald’s game. She’s a beast! I hope we see more of her in the genre because she has come a long way since Scream: The TV Series. This movie is landing on the streamer at the perfect time, as most of us are already there watching Yellowjackets. So, do yourselves a favor and check out Strange Darling while you have your friend’s Paramount+ password. You’ll thank me later.

Strange Darling arrives on Paramount+ on March 1.
