In true form once again, Tim Miller brings us another extreme horror novel that will have your stomach churning one minute and then rooting for the “hero” in the next. The characters Andy and Bridget travel around the Texas countryside in their windowless van. Along the way they pick up hitchhikers and weary travelers who see the pair as a nice couple showing Southern hospitality. However, Andy and Bridget are not what they seem, and as the book moves along, we find that Andy and Bridget may have met their match along the way.
I’ll be honest… at first this book shocked me pretty badly in the first chapter, and that’s pretty bad if Tim Miller can shock me because after everything I’ve read of his, I thought I would be numb to what was next out of his mind.
As the story progresses, we find that our two “main” characters, Andy and Bridget, aren’t as special as they thought they were; and they soon find that there are even more repugnant and repulsive people who are worse than them. In one moment when they think that they’re kings of the world, they soon find that they are merely just little specks of shit on the inside of someone’s van.
The characters are all interesting, and some who you think will be strong end up the weakest of them all. I personally love when someone takes a storyline and goes in a totally opposite direction than where I thought it was headed. I always give a thumbs up when an author can keep you guessing.
From serial killers to a child that is crazier than all of them, this book has a bit of everything you can imagine – including rats. Well, you’ll just have to read it in order to see what I’m talking about. Rape Van is again another worthwhile read from one of the geniuses of splatter punk and horror novels.
