I’ll admit, when I’d originally read the title of Andy Palmer’s The Funhouse Massacre, a wave of skepticism rolled over me – would this be just another run-of-the-mill hokey slasher, caught up in an uninspired overall presentation? After sitting through this one for 90 minutes, I can safely offer up this little nugget of pseudo-wisdom: If you’re looking for a fun time with a VERY large body count, you’d be making a mistake passing this one up.

Set against the Halloween holiday backdrop, the movie focuses on a woman who poses as a reported to gain access into a high-security prison which houses some of the most demented minds to have been placed behind bars. The collection of lunatics make their way to a local haunted attraction with the game plan in mind of racking up a colossal amount of corpses… and for all intents and purposes, they succeed in spades, but then again they wouldn’t have called this movie The Funhouse Massacre if everyone sat in a prayer circle discussing their feelings, now would they? With memorable cameos from industry notables such as Robert Englund, Courtney Gains, and Clint Howard, you can’t go wrong with character intensity. Even the inclusion of sitcom staple Jere Burns as a cult-leading psycho was a stroke of casting genius.

Now don’t go thinkin’ that this indie production is all hardcore hackin’ and slashin – no, no. There’s an ample infusion of goofy humor to dissect all that killin’! As with any dual-set, some of it will work, and some of it falls flat, but I think that the winning ingredient to this film is the fantastic variation of portrayals that’s on hand: We’ve got a killer clown, a former taxidermist, a deranged dentist, and a cannibalistic chef – each one as their strong suits, and all manage to work well together for the betterment of this crazy-assed movie. The simplicity is also a boon to the film’s success, which is odd because many others have tried the “nuts escape to kill innocents” storyline, and it’s fallen flat on too numerous of occasions. However, this massacre is one that I’d certainly buy a ticket for over and over again.

Definitely recommended to those who just want a little mindless slaughter in their faces.
