Attention, zombie fans: Hive Mind is the comic for you! Written by Jordan Clark, Hive Mind begins without any sign of flesh-eaters but slowly develops into an origin story of how the virus begins and is spread through the population of a small town.

We’re given little to go on about our main character, Dr. Franklin, but we know a few things – he’s a scientist, and he’s dying. Being given this news comes as a shock to Franklin, and he struggles with needing “more time” to create a way to survive. Enter an unknown virus, some creative use of science, and bam! – zombies.

I read Issue 1 and 2 of Hive Mind, and aside from wanting a little more back story (because I’m inquisitive and like details galore!) when it came to Franklin and his work, the story was decent. It clipped along at a steady pace, I wasn’t ever bored as I was reading, and there were a few different elements that I don’t recall seeing in any other zombie story that I’ve encountered.

There was a bit too much of Franklin contemplating that he needed “more time” – the cells that took up this particular plot point could have been used to further the story even more, instead of reiterating that Franklin was running on fumes.

The artwork, done by Chandra P. Kelly, helps move the story along, but a few times characters mentioned traits in the appearances of others that I didn’t pick up on from the illustrations.

Good story, fun to read, and interesting premise! Recommended.
