“Virtual Reality Bites,” Episode 1.06 of “iZombie,” opens up with a quick scare as we see Major lying on a metal slab, looking brutally punished after his battle with a zombie last week. For a brief moment we believe the man is dead, but that’s not the case. Ravi is just stitching the poor bastard up. Major is still worked up over Jerome’s disappearance, and it doesn’t seem as though he’s eager to back off his own makeshift investigation.

While Major’s laid out, we spot Jackie taking her need for food into her own hands, killing a delivery man (apparently an employee of Blaine’s) who lets her down. But there’s more death to contemplate than the unfortunate delivery boy’s demise as we transition directly into this week’s case. A reclusive fellow with an apparent knack for nerding out on the computer isn’t going to have the chance to do so any longer. This guy, one Mr. Simon Cutler, is not only dead as disco, he also had a bad rep on the net. He was something of a famed troll with legit hacking abilities. Needless to say, there are a lot of people out there with a desire to put a hurting on this guy. And there’s one zombie we’ve come to love – yes, that’s Liv – who doesn’t have a desire to feast on the guy’s brains. He’s been dead long enough to leave his melon a rotten mess.

Somehow, though, Liv sucks it up… literally. The woman consumes Cutler’s brain, and before we know it, we’re privy to the first vision that will help in solving this mysterious case. As it turns out, the hacker loser found himself choking on a doughnut. But it seems he actually went into anaphylactic shock, and that may be the actual cause of death… although that seems far too easy. Especially for a guy so hated. A look at a bogus birthday card provides the missing link. In fact, it is the missing link: It’s a confetti-loaded card that once had peanut dust tucked in the mix. Peanuts that old Cutler was severely allergic to.

A break from the big mystery sees Liv preparing for a date with Lowell. But before she can get out of the door, she begins to panic; Cutler was agoraphobic, and now she’s feeling his terror. He was also an avid gamer – as one would expect – which Liv discovers after Clive swings by the morgue with Cutler’s laptop. He’s hoping Liv might be able to take a look and muster up a vision or impression of some sort. Liv, who’s still at home thanks to her new social problems, is trapped indoors, but Ravi agrees to drop the laptop off at Liv’s place. Before she knows it, she’s gone full-on gamer (safer than full-on zombie?). And just like that we realize Cutler’s killer may have had ties to a popular game he was hooked on.

It isn’t long before Lowell shows up at Liv’s door. He brings her some anti-anxiety medication to help the woman cope. Apparently he recently consumed the brain of someone with post-traumatic stress disorder, and the pills came in handy. These two spend some time getting to know each other a bit better. Lowell actually seems like a decent individual, and Liv’s attraction to the man is only growing. But when he moves in for a kiss, she shuts him down; there’s a lot on Liv’s mind, some of which she tells Lowell, like the fact that she isn’t over Major just yet. Her disclosure is endearing, and it’s a sign that she may be truly open to moving forward with Lowell. Honesty is the root of a good relationship, after all.

While visiting with Lowell, Liv sees something on Cutler’s laptop that may prove a fruitful lead. It all comes down to a doughnut shop, interestingly enough. And while Liv is learning more details of the man’s demise, Clive is in the meat shop where Blaine works. Blaine very nearly has the chance to devour the detective before a call from Liv has him headed out the door to pursue a hopeful lead.

The investigation into doughnut shops ensues. A pair of shop owners that left Cutler disgruntled are being investigated, and while they have motive (Cutler trashed their business on Yelp, which brought about disaster), they don’t seem to be the most likely culprits. However, the idea that a doughnut shop could be the root of the problem still looks likely.

We cut to a shot of Jackie, who has a visitor: Blaine drops in to look into the murder of his delivery boy. He knows she’s responsible, and he’s not happy about that. Not happy enough to kill the woman in her own apartment. Looks like she should have controlled her temper (and hunger) when the kid botched the delivery earlier in the episode. Now she gets to die a second time.

More digging into local doughnut shops that could have also delivered peanut-laced (Sounds comical, right? It is!) doughnuts to the vengeful hacker follows, and soon enough Liv and Clive’s investigation turns up a very probable suspect. One mister Sean Posey is the man, and he’s got a very real reason for his sinister act: Cutler ruined his sister’s life, which, after it fell apart, she took. Posey is brought in for questioning, and he doesn’t offer much resistance. In fact, he basically confesses openly. It’s a surprisingly emotional sequence as viewers can relate to the anger that lived within Posey. Murder is never okay, but this guy watched his sister’s life torn apart by a loser, and we feel for him and his unseen sister.

Another compelling episode comes to a close, but not without a moment that signals a turning point for Liv. She heads down to the studio where Lowell records. And she takes the opportunity to pick up where they left off the night before. The episode closes on a kiss and a little bit of hope for a greater degree of normalcy in Liv’s life… oh, and we also see Liv discover that Blaine is related to The Candy Man.
