Potential Details Revealed for Inevitable It Follows Sequel

Given the box office success of David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows (review), it should come as no surprise that a sequel is already being talked about. Whether you think it needs one or not, a money-making film almost always leads to a follow-up, and those talks have indeed begun.

Entertainment Weekly reports today that Radius-TWC is in the very early stages of plotting out a potential sequel to It Follows, which just might answer some of the many questions left in the wake of Mitchell’s critically-acclaimed horror film.

I don’t want to give away too much, but we’ve thought about it,” says Tom Quinn, co-president of Radius-TWC. “Flip the title. There’s so much you could do.”

What exactly does Quinn mean by that statement? Is he suggesting that the sequel might be titled Follow It? And if so, what kind of clue is that?

If Quinn is hinting at the title Follow It—a really empowering reversal, if you think about it—the plot could have characters tracing their partners’ sexual histories to track the curse’s origin (while evading the killer creature), which would give the movie a strong allegorical element similar to the first film’s,” speculates EW writer Kevin Sullivan. “The original’s heroine, Jay, or possibly an entirely new lead would have to take a literal journey through the messy ties of past sexual partners, a task that undoubtedly comes with its own lessons and parallels to the titular IT.”

All we know for now is that a sequel is most definitely in the works, and David Robert Mitchell has expressed a strong interest in returning. We’ll report more as we learn it.

It Follows was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell and features an up and coming ensemble cast that includes Maika Monroe (The Guest, The Fifth Wave) in the lead role.

Monroe plays 19-year-old Jay, who, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions. She can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.
