What’s Your Scariest Haunted House Experience?

housesThis past Tuesday saw the DVD release of Bobby Roe’s The Houses October Built (review), which was one of the better found footage films in recent years. Set in the world of haunted attractions, it’s a real treat for those who consider October the best month of the year, and all of us here on Dread recommend you check it out.

In the film a group of friends on a road trip to the country’s scariest haunts find themselves living one of their very own, as they’re pulled into a waking nightmare with no escape. The subject matter of the film got us thinking about our scariest haunt experiences, and we’re also curious about yours.

Back in 2009, my wife and I paid our inaugural visit to Canada, staying at a hotel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. If you’ve been there, you know that the strip is littered with tourist traps, and one of those traps is a haunted attraction known as Nightmares Fear Factory.

Nightmares Fear Factory is billed as “The World’s Most Frightening Experience!,” and it is indeed one of the scariest I’ve encountered. The entire haunt is completely pitch black, with little red lights on the walls guiding your path and letting you know where to go.

It’s been several years so I don’t remember specifics about the attraction, but I do remember that my wife was at one point curled up in the fetal position in a corner, while a man wielding a chainsaw swiped at her legs from the ground level. So yeah. It was about as scary as these things get.

The coolest thing about Nightmares Fear Factory is that they have a camera positioned at the scariest point of the attraction to take your picture while you’re at your most terrified. Like the rides at Universal Studios, you can purchase the picture upon exit, and you’ll find ours down below.

According to the haunt’s website, over 100,000 people have to date bailed before the exit, screaming out the password “NIGHTMARE” and being escorted out of the attraction. A pretty impressive statistic, to say the very least.
