We’ve been talking about a big screen version of Marvel’s mystic superhero Doctor Strange for some time now, and finally the news has come regarding who will be playing him. Deadline is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch will be the man to master the power of the dark arts!
Cumberbatch is the studio’s #1 choice for the film, and negotiations are about to begin. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south and Marvel went back to the drawing board. Names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy were also in the mix at one time or another.
Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange, and Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the pic (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.
The character was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during the Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.
