Film Adaptation of Anne Rice's The Tale of the Body Thief and More Back On at UniversalThus far adaptations of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles have been a mixed bag, but it looks like her fans have a lot to look forward to now that Universal Pictures has acquired movie rights to her entire The Vampire Chronicles series for Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment.

Per Variety, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are on board to produce. Imagine president Erica Huggins will oversee films based on the series for Imagine Entertainment, and Bobby Cohen will exec produce.

Even better, the deal includes the adapted screenplay for Tale of the Body Thief written by Rice’s son, author Christopher Rice. Both Anne and Christopher tweeted the news today, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Rice’s Chronicles as a whole include Interview with the Vampire (1976), The Vampire Lestat (1960), The Queen of the Damned (1988), the aforementioned The Tale of the Body Thief (1992), Memnoch the Devil (1995), The Vampire Armand (1998), Merrick (2000), Blood and Gold (2001), Blackwood Farm (2002), Blood Canticle (2007), and the upcoming Prince Lestat (October 2014).

The series is centered on the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French aristocrat living in poverty who became a vampire in the late 18th century. Both Interview and Queen of the Damned were previously turned into films, and while the former was quite good – and successful – the less said about the latter, the better.

Look for lots more soon!
