Escape from New York Remake Details; Plissken Actor Wish List Revealed
We’ve been talking about a remake of John Caprenter’s classic flick Escape from New York for a long time now, and finally some details have come to light, including the wishlist of actors being eyed to play Snake Pilissken.
Starlog is reporting that, according to a source close to the project, Silver Pictures has a shortlist of actors narrowed down to three: Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim, “Sons of Anarchy”), Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”), and Dan Stevens (The Guest).
Honestly? We cannot picture any of the three bringing the type of bravado and gusto to the role that Kurt Russell did, but of the trio named, I’ve gotta go with Bernthal. Hunnam is said to be the studio’s #1 pick.
Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures is planning an entirely new take on the material. The goal is to turn it into a trilogy, starting with an origin story in a fashion similar to the way Rise of the Planet of the Apes restarted that franchise.
The site goes on to report that the script for the film had always had a team-dynamic to it, and the emphasis has almost turned the supporting characters into co-leads. And while Snake Plissken is still looking to be the de facto leader of the team, it seems these characters will be a mix of the old and the new: “Plissken’s team consists of Mina, a war zone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief; Gareth, the last surviving member of the President’s security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken’s former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery.”
Keep one eye open for more.
