‘Anything But Ghosts’ Star Cooper Tomlinson Describes Curry Barker’s Horror Film as “Key and Peele Walked Into ‘Hereditary'”

One of the biggest questions surrounding Obsession director Curry Barker‘s next horror film, Anything But Ghosts, has been its tone. We already know the film follows two fake paranormal investigators who finally encounter the real thing, but now co-star Cooper Tomlinson (also Obsession) has offered the clearest description yet of what audiences should expect.
Barker previously revealed that Anything But Ghosts centers on “two con artist ghost hunters” who make a living scamming grieving families before running into a genuinely terrifying supernatural entity. The premise immediately drew comparisons to The Frighteners, suggesting the film would begin as a horror comedy before taking a much darker turn.
Now Tomlinson has put that tonal balancing act into a single unforgettable sentence.
“Yeah, and I’m playing one of the leads as well. It’s me and Curry,” Tomlinson confirmed to Raiders of the Lost Podcast. “The movie’s like if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary. It’s a buddy comedy, you know, about these two guys, and it turns really scary.“
He adds: “You know, it’s about these con artist ghost hunters who encounter real ghosts, and then they have to step up and be the thing that they promised this family.”
It’s a description that perfectly complements everything Barker has said about the project so far. Rather than leaning entirely into comedy or horror, Anything But Ghosts appears to begin with two lovable frauds pulling off elaborate paranormal scams before forcing them into a genuine supernatural nightmare where they have to become the heroes they only pretended to be.
Barker has also previously confirmed that Anything But Ghosts exists in the same universe as his breakout hit Obsession, teasing that the two films share a larger supernatural mythology.
Anything But Ghosts is currently in post-production and reunites Barker and Tomlinson following Milk & Serial and Obsession. Although the cast also includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, Violet McGraw, and Chris Reinacher, Barker and Tomlinson are leading the story as the pair of ghost-hunting con artists at its center.
Produced by Blumhouse, Spooky Pictures, Divide/Conquer, Image Nation, and That’s a Bad Idea, Anything But Ghosts will be released by Focus Features.
