Lily James to Battle Ancient Spirits in ‘Seasons’ from ‘Backrooms’ Producers

Lily James (pictured above in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) has been cast in the upcoming haunter, Seasons, for Amazon MGM reports Deadline.

Based on a viral horror short story by Matt & Harrison Query, which the outlet notes first appeared on Reddit and was later adapted into a full-length novel, Seasons “follows a husband and wife who buy their dream ranch, only to discover the land is alive with ancient spirits, and survival means submitting to increasingly disturbing rituals with each turn of the season.”

Drew Hancock (Companion) will direct from his script.

Producers are Shawn Levy and Dan Levine of 21 Laps, alongside Jason Blum and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster, 12:01 Films’ Scott Glassgold, and Dan Cohen. The project is the third collaboration between Atomic Monster and 21 Laps, following the massive success of Backrooms, now A24’s highest-grossing movie.

Horror fans may be most familiar with the “Downtown Abbey” star from her role as Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. She most recently appeared in films such as Swiped, Relay and The Iron Claw.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what Hancock does with his sophomore horror feature. Companion left me feeling more than impressed, becoming one of my favorite genre films of last year. Still mad that the marketing spoiled the twist, though. Still, the filmmaker has all the talent necessary to deliver one truly frightening ghost story.

21 Laps and Atomic Monster obviously feel the same. The only question now is if the film can reach anywhere near the success of Backrooms. Time will tell.
