Mark Duplass Confirms Kane Parsons Directed ‘Backrooms’ Amid Absurd Speculation

The Creep Tapes

Any time you have a fresh new director taking the reigns of a major studio project, there tends to be speculation on whether or not they’re up to the task. Sometimes, you even have rumors circling that the filmmaker didn’t direct the film at all (Tobe Hooper on Poltergeist, anyone?). That appears to be the case with the twenty years young Kane Parsons, whose debut feature, Backrooms, is set to hit theaters this weekend via A24. But actor Mark Duplass (Creep) isn’t having it.

In response to an X user claiming Parsons didn’t direct the film, Duplass reposted the comment with this to say: “Hmmm, with all due respect I don’t remember seeing you on set. When I was there, Kane was 100% in control. More so than many directors 3x his age.

When you’re right, you’re right. If anyone knows who was directing on set and who wasn’t, it’s Duplass, not some Joe Schmoe with zero involvement in the project.

Leave it to Peach Fuzz to put an axe to the face of such blatant nonsense.

Of course, that wasn’t the first accusation against Parsons directing. Rumors have circulated for a while now. In a sense, I get it. Especially with filmmakers like Osgood Perkins and James Wan producing, some want to speculate that they or others have taken the reigns, a la Spielberg on Poltergeist. Factor in Parsons’ age and inexperience, and there’s reason to assume Parsons may not be as on hands as you’d think. I, on the other hand, am taking Duplass’ word for it. Until I hear otherwise, Parsons directed Backrooms and that’s all there is to it.

In Backrooms, Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers a portal to a strange, empty office space hidden in the back of his shop.

Lukita Maxwell, Renate Reinsve and Finn Bennett also star in the liminal horror movie based on Parsons’ YouTube series.

Enter the Backrooms on May 29, 2026.
