Curry Barker Hid Himself in ‘Obsession’ and It’s a Hilarious Easter Egg

Obsession is celebrating its second weekend at the box office, jumping an astounding 30% over last weekend’s already impressive numbers. It’s one of the most exciting horror moments of the year, and it’s one of those movies I love to keep talking about and can’t wait to share with friends and family.

There’s not much dissection to do on Obsession right now, aside from our continual push for Inde Navarrette to be nominated for an Academy Award next year. Note to readers: buckle up. We’re going to be aggressive about that – just like we were with Toni Collette and Hereditary. I’m still scarred by that, by the way.

But digressing. There’s a really fun moment in Obsession – spoiler warning – where the main character, Bear, played by Michael Johnston, finally realizes that his wish is real, that it’s getting progressively worse, and that he wants out. So he finds another “One Wish Willow” and calls the number on the back to speak with customer service about reversing his wish. It’s maybe the funniest moment in the entire movie. It adds levity, comedy, and relief to an otherwise tragic, traumatic, and incredibly brutal thriller.

To both him and the viewer’s surprise, someone actually answers the phone. And instead of shying away and keeping the movie shrouded in secrecy and vagueness, the scene gives you everything you need to know. The person on the other line offers a lot of information, and the big piece of trivia here is: who is that actor? It’s none other than writer-director Curry Barker himself! This was confirmed by Barker in interviews shortly after the film’s release, and is also reflected in the Letterboxd credits. It’s a fun piece of trivia and one of the most entertaining moments in the movie.

Obsession will cross the $80M mark at the box office by tonight.
