‘Ready or Not’ Filmmakers Radio Silence to Direct ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Movie

Can’t say I saw this one coming. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not) have signed on to direct a Choose Your Own Adventure feature adaptation for 20th Century Studios, reports Deadline this afternoon.
Tom Bissell (The Disaster Artist) is writing the script.
At this time, there aren’t any details on the plot.
Launched way back in 1979 by Bantam Books with The Cave of Time by Edward Packard, the series is comprised of novels that allow the reader play a role in where the story goes.
While I never personally read the series, I was a big fan of R.L. Stine’s take on the phenomena through his Goosebumps books. I have many memories of getting all the characters killed and not making it through to the end. So, despite my knowledge, I’m guessing I wouldn’t make it through a horror movie, after all.
The outlet notes that more than 184 of these books were published by 30 different authors between 1997-1999, with stories set everywhere from the ocean to outer space and myriad fantasy worlds. With Radio Silence attached, I have to imagine that the filmmakers behind Abigail and Scream 5-6 will include horror elements in the film. But, at this moment, I’d expect more of an adventure movie akin to Jumanji with (hopefully) some scary surprises.
Bissell has written for the Batman: Arkham Origins and Uncharted games, furthering my belief that fans should expect more of a straight-forward adventure than anything purely genre. However, if successful, the film could very well expand into a whole franchise with multiple opportunities for pure horror stories. We shall see.
Next up for Radio Silence is the fourth Mummy movie with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning to their roles.
Stay tuned to Dread for more details on the Choose Your Own Adventure movie as we learn them.
