Lionsgate Bringing Twisty ‘The Housemaid’ to the Stage!

I didn’t see this one coming, but I can’t say I’m surprised. Lionsgate is apparently bringing their hit franchise, The Housemaid, to the stage, reports Variety.
The play is being developed for the stage by producers Melting Pot, a British company led by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska (Broadway’s “Paranormal Activity”) and playwright Bekah Brunstetter (Broadway’s “The Notebook”).
Said Friend, “When I first read The Housemaid, it was exhilarating. What occurred to me is how truly theatrical the story is, not only happening largely in a single, claustrophobic location, but the twisty elements which contemporize what has long worked in potboiler stage thrillers.”
Added Brunstetter, “I’m so thrilled to be bringing this gripping, emotional, strange, and even funny story to the stage. Not only have I fallen in love with the adaptation process and bringing books to life on both stage and screen, I’m extremely excited to dig into The Housemaid’s incredibly universal themes of jealousy, the pain of desire, and the traumas that connect us.”
Based on the novel by Freida McFadden and adapted by Rebecca Sonnenshine, The Housemaid stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, a woman on probation and in desperate need of a job. Her prayers are answered in the guise of Nina (Amanda Seyfried), the wife of a rich husband looking for a live-in nanny. The opportunity seems too good to be true…and it soon turns out to be once Nina begins displaying erratic behavior. Things only get worse once Millie finds herself falling for Nina’s husband, leading to betrayal, madness, and murder.
The Paul Feig-directed film was such a smash at the box office, that Lionsgate almost immediately greenlit a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret. Slated to release on December 17th, 2027, the sequel sees the return of Sweeney and Michele Morrone, with Kirsten Dunst also on board.
