Folk Horror Film ‘Bokshi’ Acquired by Wild Duck Productions

Wild Duck Productions has acquired the rights folk horror film Bokshi, reports Variety.

Meaning “witch” in Nepali, Bokshi, “follows Anahita, a troubled teen who finds solace in Shalini, a mysterious history teacher leading a trek to an ancient site called ‘The Navel.’ The school excursion takes a dark turn as connections emerge between the site and a cult worshipping Bokshi, a feared folkloric demoness.”

Mansi Multani and Prasanna Bisht star.

Bhargav Saikia directed from a script by Harsh Vaibhav.

The outlet notes that the film has undergone a creative evolution since it premiered in the International Film Festival Rotterdam‘s Harbour section in January 2025. Apparently, the film was recut with a focus on eroticism and a sense of dread in the vein of Robert Eggers’ work. Color me curious.

Said Saikia, “At its core, it is a cautionary tale that sheds light on universal and socially relevant themes of women empowerment and humanity’s relation with Mother Earth. The film attempts to subvert the negative idea of the witch prevalent in society and presents it as a symbol of empowerment of the female.”

Currently on a festival run in India, Wild Duck Productions is planning on a Halloween theatrical release for the film.
