The Batshit-Insane ‘Hope’ Already Has a Sequel Ready to Go

The reviews out of the Cannes Film Festival for Hope are nothing short of divisive, but in the end, they’re all calling the film an instant cult classic and batshit insane.
What we’re going to get from Neon later this year is the full-blown kitchen sink of sci-fi, action, and horror all blended together into one massive sci-fi creature feature from the director of The Wailing.
Neon’s been on a roll lately, with Hokum performing incredibly strong at the box office for a low-budget independent release, so things bode well for Hope when Neon eventually releases it in theaters later this year.
If the film does well not just domestically but internationally, where it is produced and sold, a sequel has already been written and is ready to go; director Na Hong-jin is ready to get back behind the camera and into production as soon as possible. Obviously, sales and box office will determine whether that happens.
Here’s what Hong-jin had to say during a press conference on Monday, saying: “I think you can readily imagine this sequel. And there’s a script that’s already been done that I’d like to shoot. So if I have the opportunity, I would indeed make a sequel if possible.”
Neon (Longlegs, Hokum) will release the latest genre offering from The Wailing director Na Hong-Jin later this year.
The film’s title comes from the location: In Hope Harbor, a remote village near the Demilitarized Zone, police outpost chief Bum-seok receives alarming news from locals that a tiger has appeared. As the village erupts into panic, Bum-seok is forced to confront a reality beyond belief.
Starring are Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (Moving), Hoyeon (“Squid Game”), Michael Fassbender (The Killer), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Taylor Russell (Bones and All), and Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”).
Hope marks the first feature from Hong-jin since his excellent folk horror film, The Wailing.
