WTFilms Nabs Folk-Horror ‘King’s Daughters’ from ‘Red Rooms’ Director

WTFilms has nabbed the historical folk-horror film King’s Daughters, reports Variety this morning.
“Set in 1663, the film chronicles the cursed transatlantic voyage of the first group of orphan virgins sent by King Louis XIV to be married off in his faltering colony of New-France, which is the area now known as Quebec. These exiled maidens – including the youngest, Catherine Moitié, 13 years old – undergo a horrifying crossing of 111 days, plagued by promiscuity, disease, superstitious crew, famine, vermin, apathy and death.”
Sandrine Bonnaire, Laurie Babin, Lauréna Thellier, Zoé Adjani and Marguerite Champoux star.
Pascal Plante (Red Rooms) directed the film from a script co-written with Dominique Dussault.
Red Rooms absolutely blew me away, becoming one of my favorite films of 2024. Plante has a brilliant ability to show just enough to get you imagining the worst things possible, without actually showing much of anything. The film disturbed me to my core. So, consider me excited for whatever he’s about to deliver with King’s Daughters.
Producing are Dussault from Nemesis Films (Red Rooms), Stephanie Morissette from La Maison de Prod (Ravenous) and Caroline Bonmarchand from Avenue B (The Origin of Evil).
Said Dussault, Morissette and Bonmarchand , “As three women producers, we are proud to be part of the current wave of change that is bringing greater attention to women’s contributions to history. ‘King’s Daughters’’ themes of female solidarity within a story of survival, oppression, and resilience will resonate deeply with contemporary audiences. This epic tale offers viewers a glimpse into the origins of what we now call sisterhood.”
Shooting is set to resume this June in St-Malo, France, with a release planned for 2027.
