‘The Third Hotel’ – Horror Novel Getting a Feature Film Adaptation from ‘Huesera: The Bone Woman’ Director

Author Laura Van Den Berg‘s horror novel, The Third Hotel, is getting a feature film adaptation from production company FirstGen, reports Deadline. And the talent involved behind the camera is very exciting.

The Third Hotel, “follows Clare, a recent widow who travels to Latin America weeks after her husband Richard’s mysterious death, driven by the need to understand her role in his early passing. Lost in a new, unfamiliar city, she spots a man in the street, and it’s not just someone who looks like Richard, it’s him in the flesh. What begins as a skeptical pursuit of Richard’s double quickly devolves into an all-consuming obsession, unraveling Clare’s grip on reality and pulling her into a liminal nightmare where she is suspended between the living and the dead.”

Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman) will direct from a script by Isa Mazzei (Cam).

Said Cervera, “I’m so thrilled to work on an adaptation of such an eerie and brilliant novel alongside Isa Mazzei, whose work I’m a real fan of, and FirstGen, who have made films I love. I’m honored to be part of it.”

Added Mazzei, “The book is wonderfully surreal and deeply unsettling in a way that lingered with me. I’m excited to be able to translate that feeling into a cinematic experience, and I feel lucky to be collaborating with such a thoughtful and talented team.”

Personally, I share their excitement. Cervera’s Huesera: The Bone Woman haunts me to this day. A chilling psychological horror tale with bone-crunching audio design that I can hear now as I’m typing this. Mazzei, meanwhile, is perhaps best known for writing Cam, a Netflix original that blew me away and remains one of the best original films to land on the streamer. Her latest feature, Faces of Death, just landed on PVOD.

I haven’t read The Third Hotel, but with this talent involved, the adaptation just shot right up to one of my more anticipated films.

Stay tuned to Dread for more details as we learn them.
