Simon Rex to Get Stuck In a Crappy Situation In the Thriller ‘Don’t Get Up!’

In news that Lethal Weapon 2‘s Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) can sure relate to, Deadline reports that Simon Rex has signed on to star in the thriller Don’t Get Up!, which centers around quite a shitty situation.

Set during a stormy night in Oklahoma, Don’t Get Up! follows, “Barry (Rex), an ordinary man whose night spirals into a nightmare when he discovers the motel toilet he is sitting on has been rigged with a deadly explosive device. A mysterious caller informs Barry that he is sitting on the trigger: if he stands up, he dies.”

“To survive, he must pay $220,000 before the countdown reaches zero. Cut off from the world by catastrophic flooding, with nothing but his phone and his wits, Barry is forced into a terrifying psychological battle with the unseen bombmaker who has targeted him for an unknown reason, while an FBI agent races to uncover the truth. As every desperate attempt to escape only worsens his situation, Barry realizes the attack is connected to a devastating secret from his past. As the clock ticks down in real time, Barry must confront his guilt, reconnect with the family he abandoned, and somehow survive the night without ever standing up.”

This sounds like a touch like a feature film expansion of that Lethal Weapon 2 sequence where Roger Murtaugh finds himself sitting on a toilet rigged with a bomb. It turned out all right for him, so maybe Barry will be okay. Maybe…

Rex has a history of playing comedic characters in genre films, having appeared in the likes of Scary Movie 3-5 and Blink Twice. He’s an excellent choice to toss into this nightmare trip to the bathroom that should bring a ton of humor with the terror.

Shaun Higton will direct from a script by The Higton Brothers.

Producers are Timur Bekmambetov, Maria Zatulovskaya, and Adam Sidman for Bazelevs, Andrew Adam Higton and Shaun Higton (Higton Brothers), and John Einar Hagen for Norsecode.

Don’t Get Up! is set to begin production in November.
