‘Mortal Kombat II’ Writer Jeremy Slater Teases Directorial Debut, ‘Summoner’: “It’s the Scariest Thing I’ve Ever Written”

Writer Jeremy Slater is having a good weekend, with Mortal Kombat II killing it at the box office and hopes for a third film growing. And now, we’re hearing that the scribe has a new horror film dubbed Summoner green-lit, one that he believes is going to be terrifying.
Hidden in an interview with THR discussing the new Mortal Kombat, Slater mentioned a script he wrote for horror film Summoner that had just been green-lit. “I’m finally getting my chance behind the camera to direct something. I wrote a movie called Summoner that just got the green light. I don’t think I can say where yet. It’s one of the majors, and they might want to make announcements. But it’s bounced around for a while, and I’ve found the perfect home for it with creative partners that I’m really, really excited about.”
Continued Slater, “So we’re casting at the moment, and I’m hoping to shoot it in August. It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever written, and it’s a very, very fun horror movie. I’ve been dreaming about this day for my entire life, and now it’s right around the corner. So once I finish Mortal Kombat III, the goal is to really dive into Summoner.“
Not only does it sound like Summoner is one to keep an eye out for, but it’s exciting to learn that Slater will finally get to mark his feature directorial debut with the film, as well.
Slater first came onto the scene with his script for the horror pic, The Lazarus Effect. He has since built quite the name for himself, having written the excellent Pet, Adam Wingard’s Death Note, “The Exorcist” TV series, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and, of course, Mortal Kombat II.
At this time, there are no details on Summoner‘s plot, or who will distribute the film.
Stay tuned to Dread for more details. And don’t miss Mortal Kombat II, now in theaters.
