‘Evil Dead Burn’: The Surprise Connection to ‘Evil Dead Rise’

After spending the better part of two years producing, overseeing, marketing, and helping distribute Terrifier 3, I found myself pulled away from what I really love, talking about horror movies. When you are focused on that side of things day to day, you tend to miss a lot of the big announcements, trailer reveals, and the conversations that make this genre so engaging. Now I am finally able to come back to this at full capacity, even with projects like The Heretiks just being announced.

What I have always loved most about horror fandom is the theories, the speculation, and the discussions that build around a film’s release. There is a lot happening right now, including Backrooms, but my attention is firmly on Evil Dead Burn. On the surface, it looked like another standalone entry in the Evil Dead universe, similar to how Evil Dead Rise was initially positioned. But looking closer, fans are starting to point out some interesting connections.

In the recently released green band trailer, the main character is seen watching a video of her own wedding. The ceremony appears to take place on a dock by a lake, and some viewers believe this could be the same location seen at the beginning and end of Evil Dead Rise, where the character Jessica (Anna-Maree Thomas) becomes possessed and kills her friends lakeside with a boat motor. If that connection holds, it would be one of the first direct links between the newer films, outside of smaller nods like Bruce Campbell’s car appearing in Fede Alvarez‘s Evil Dead (2013).

There is also speculation around the Necronomicon, with some suggesting that the characters in Evil Dead Burn may be reading from the same passage as the group in Evil Dead (2013). Another theory is that the house featured in the film is the same one used by Ruby in Ash vs. Evil Dead, which would explain why a Necronomicon is present there. Reports indicate it is, in fact, the same house, whether that choice was intentional or not.

Regardless, these details are fueling a discussion that Evil Dead Burn may be more connected to the larger story than it first appeared. The Jessica connection alone has already become a major talking point.

Evil Dead Burn ignites theaters on July 10.
