‘Angel Down’ – Daniel Kraus Horror Novel Receives Pulitzer for “Best Fiction Book”

If you don’t already know the name Daniel Kraus, that should change soon. The horror novelist has seen a meteoric rise over the last decade or so. He collaborated on the novel Trollhunters with Guillermo del Toro. Finished George A. Romero’s The Living Dead. And left readers breathless with Whalefall (soon to be released as a film starring Austin Abrams). Today, Kraus can add to his list of impressive accolades, as his one-of-a-kind novel, Angel Down, has received a Pulitzer for “Best Fiction Book”!

Kraus took to Bluesky to announce the news, saying, “Guys, Angel Down won the Pulitzer Prize. Let’s get nuts.”

Angel Down centers around five soldiers who discover an angel in No Man’s Land during WWI. Outside of the curious premise, what makes the novel so unique is that it’s written as one long, running sentence. Remember how English teachers would tell you run-on sentences are bad? Well, as they say, rules are meant to be broken, kids.

Regretfully, I must admit that I haven’t read Angel Down yet (it’s a high priority on my list, I swear), but I’m thrilled to see Kraus take home the award nevertheless. The author is an exciting talent who left me gasping for air with Whalefall. He tends to take out-of-the-box approaches to storytelling that always manage to hook readers immediately. For example, each chapter of Whalefall–about a man swallowed by a whale–is simply titled after the remaining air left in the protagonist’s tank. That technique has the reader practically feeling the loss of air themselves, and it’s brilliant.

Angel Down is currently in the works for a film adaptation through Imagine Entertainment.

You can next see Kraus’ work on screen when Whalefall swims into theaters October 16th via 20th Century Studios.

Congrats once again Mr. Kraus! Well earned.
