‘Repo! The Genetic Opera’ Returns to Theaters on May 29

It was a shock when Saw co-creator James Wan didn’t return to direct the sequel and instead opted to helm the Gothic horror Dead Silence. This was great news for a young Darren Lynn Bousman, who had his big break with Lionsgate’s Saw II, which led him to getting behind the camera for Saw III and Saw IV, as well.
He would piggyback Saw IV on his dream project, the ambitious horror rock opera, Repo! The Genetic Opera, which would assemble the most insane ensemble of talent from Paris Hilton to Sarah Brightman (Phantom of the Opera). It became somewhat of a cult phenomenon upon its 2008 release and started filling midnight screenings that could only be rivaled by The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Now, Lionsgate has announced that Repo! will return to theaters for a one-night-only event on May 29 at Regal Theatres.
Released in November of 2008, Repo! takes viewers to the mid-21st century, where an epidemic of organ failure leads to the rise of GeneCo., a company that provides transplants at a high price. Those who miss their payments become targets of GeneCo. mercenaries, who repossess the organs.
Director Darren Lynn Bousman recently revealed that a special 4K release is also in the works.
Here’s some brand new poster art to stamp the re-release.
This is not your parents’ opera.
