BREAKING: Curry Barker‘s widely praised Obsession is set to hit theaters this May, and he’s already revving up for an exciting project. THR reports the huge news that the filmmaker is in talks to write/direct a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film for A24!
The film will be a separate take from the A24 TV Texas Chainsaw series coming from Glen Powell, Dan Cohen and JT Mollner.
Roy Lee will produce the new Texas Chainsaw along with his Spooky Pictures partner Steven Schneider. Stuart Manashil and Exurbia Films’ Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, and Kim Henkel will also produce. Ben Ross of Image Nation will executive produce.
Plot details for the film are unknown at this time.
Tobe Hooper’s original Texas Chain Saw Massacre first sawed into eyeballs in 1974. There have since been numerous sequels/remakes, the latest being David Blue Garcia’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) for Netflix. Both the franchise and its chain saw wielding killer, Leatherface, are enormously iconic. Handing Barker the keys to it expresses a lot of faith in the young director. Based on everything I’m hearing about Obsession, there’s good reason for that.
In his review, Dread Central’s Josh Korngut referred to Obsession as “the next-gen horror masterpiece I wasn’t prepared for”.
Barker first caught the attention of horror fans with Milk and Serial, the serial killer feature that he uploaded straight to YouTube. The filmmaker also just completed principal photography for his next feature, Anything But Ghosts, which he wrote, directed and co-stars in for producers Jason Blum and Roy Lee.
I fully expect Barker to add some fresh fuel to a Chain Saw franchise that has felt a bit stagnant as of late.
Stay tuned to Dread for more details, and don’t miss Obsession when it becomes your latest obsession on May 15th.
