‘Clayface’: First Official Look Revealed… And It’s Not What You Expect

Warner Bros. has quietly unveiled the first official look at Clayface, but instead of showing the monster, the studio is starting with something far more subtle: the man before the horror.
The newly released image presents Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen… not as the disfigured villain, but as a rising actor featured on an in-universe magazine cover.
The photo, officially released by the studio today, is intentionally framed as a piece of the film’s world, establishing Hagen’s public persona before his transformation.
That approach lines up with what was shown behind closed doors at CinemaCon. Early footage focuses heavily on Hagen’s downfall, including scenes of him disfigured in a hospital, undergoing disturbing physical changes, and ultimately losing control of his own face. The film is described as a full-on body-horror take, similar to Cronenberg’s The Fly.
In that context, the magazine image isn’t random; it’s the “before” shot. It establishes Hagen as a recognizable, even marketable figure, making the eventual descent into something monstrous more impactful.
Directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan, Clayface focuses on a B-movie actor who drinks a substance meant to boost his career, only to be left entirely made of clay.
The monster hasn’t been fully revealed yet, but the trailer drop is imminent.
In a surprise move, the studio recently shifted the film to October 23, 2026, right in the heart of the Halloween season.
