Ti West’s ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ – First Look Footage Features ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ Reference

Paramount has unveiled the first footage from Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, a new take on Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella A Christmas Carol that stars Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd) as the titular character, reports Deadline out of CinemaCon.

Directed by Ti West (X) from a script by Nathaniel Halpern, the “bold new twist” on the Dickens tale, “Follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly businessman who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, forcing him to confront his life and ultimately change his ways.”

Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen also star.

The outlet writes that the footage previewed, “showed everything you’d expect — a homely, elderly looking Depp in prosthetics, as Scrooge, shouting “Ba, humbug!” and being visited by three ghosts, who will change his perspective on life.”

Hunter Bolding added some additional (and exciting) details on X, writing, “Ti West’s A Christmas Carol has Johnny Depp back in his element as Scrooge. Ian McKellen warns him of the three ghosts, and those ghosts are terrifying visages. There’s even an homage to Nightmare on Elm Street with Scrooge being pulled into a mattress.

Said Depp, “When I was approached by Ti West, my first thought was, there’s no one who can do it as good as Alastair Sim did in the ’30s or whatever. It’s a magical performance. But then I thought, that’s no reason not to attempt something…I think Ti really did something very special.

Emma Watts produced the film, while executive producers included David Reid, Adam Bohling, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, West, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol visits theaters on November 13th via Paramount, in association with Domain Entertainment.
