New ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Footage Teases Brutal Fight Between Johnny Cage and Baraka

Mortal Kombat II

New footage for Mortal Kombat II just played at CinemaCon in Vegas, and it sounds like further proof that the filmmakers nailed the tone of the franchise.

Via THR, the new footage shows “Johnny Cage [Karl Urban] talking a big game against mutant Baraka and trying to get him to fight Ludi Lin’s Liu Kang. However, his fast talking backfires when he’s called to take part in the fight instead because of the annoyance he’s caused.

Continued the outlet, “Cage then starts to panic, stuttering, “I’m just a fucking actor” and “I have stuntmen do this shit for me.” He flails, “I’m going to die,” which his opponent confirms as he asks his face to be spared. But he’s encouraged by his friends, “you’re an actor, so act,” and kicks it — literally — into gear, showing off his martial arts skills and taking flight with some flips, followed by a kick to Baraka’s privates.”

DiscussingFilm writes about the footage, “The scene opens on Cage traveling with former champion Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) to confront Baraka (CJ Bloomfield). When Baraka doesn’t agree to Liu’s terms, Cage teases Baraka, calling him a “fucking pussy,” convincing Baraka to challenge Cage to a fight instead. Cage, a fish out of water with no real fighting experience, tries to run away from the challenge, but Baraka chases him through the desert village, pummels him down, and throws him out of a hut.

Cage, flat on his face, is encouraged to play the part of his “movie” persona to win the battle. He picks up his sunglasses, does his iconic pose, and says, “It’s showtime.” With his stronger confidence, he stands a better chance of fighting Baraka, and the fight culminates with Cage spinning his arms before doing the splits and punching Baraka in the crotch, ending the fight. Fans will be happy to know that plenty of his fighting style and kicks are taken straight from his move set from the Mortal Kombat games. Urban slips into his role as Cage very well, capturing the cocky movie star with humor, gusto, and charisma.”

I love everything about this because not only does it sound like the film “gets” the character of Cage, but features Cage’s iconic “dick punch”. A classic for anyone who played Mortal Kombat when they were twelve.

Mortal Kombat II follows “the fan favorite champions — now joined by Johnny Cage himself — as they are pitted against one another in the ultimate battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”

Simon McQuoid returns to direct from a script written by Jeremy Slater (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire).

The film also stars Jessica McNamee, Joe TaslimHiroyuki SanadaAdeline RudolphTati GabrielleJosh Lawson and Tadanobu Asano.

Mortal Kombat II brings the fatalities to theaters on May 8th.
