‘The Howling’ – StudioCanal Announces Reimagining of Joe Dante’s Cult Classic!

We’re well underway with Cinemacon in Las Vegas, and the news is flowing like a fresh gallon of blood. It was just announced that a reboot of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York is on the way via StudioCanal. As if that wasn’t shocking enough, the studio has also revealed plans for a reimagining of Joe Dante‘s cult werewolf film, The Howling, reports THR.
Executive VP of Global Marketing and Distribution for the studio, Hugh Spearing, revealed the news.
Based on the novel by Gary Brandner, Joe Dante’s (Gremlins) The Howling follows news reporter Karen (Dee Wallace) after she’s attacked by a vicious serial killer. A therapist sends her to a retreat where he believes she’ll find help to recover from her trauma, but the reporter instead discovers a commune inhabited by werewolves.
Released in 1981, The Howling has been in an eternal debate with An American Werewolf in London over which is the best werewolf film. While I love and adore both, The Howling has always been more my hairy jam. You can read why here.
A remake was first set up at Dimension Films in the late 2000s, with Joe Nimziki attached to direct around 2009, but the project never moved forward. Last we heard, Andy Muschietti (IT) was in talks to direct a new Howling film for Netflix. With this news, it seems that’s no longer the case.
Whoever becomes attached, I just hope they go big on delivering werewolves through old-school practical effects, the way the film gods intended.
At this time, there are no further details on the project. Stay tuned to Dread as we discover more to howl about.
