‘Resident Evil’ Trailer Description from CinemaCon; Official Synopsis!

'Resident Evil' Footage/Trailer Description from CinemaCon

Outside of Backrooms, the biggest horror film of the year is going to be Resident Evil, Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger‘s take on the famed video game series.

Fans are skeptical of his reported departure from the screenplay, which diverges from the video games and takes the story in a new direction.

Thankfully, early reports from a test screening were more than positive, teasing a nonstop horror-thriller ride in the vein of Fury Road that’s “all gas, no brakes,” and said to be almost entirely built around tension.

The story follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams (Weapons), a package delivery driver tasked with transporting a mysterious briefcase to Raccoon City Hospital during a deadly virus outbreak.

Now, Sony Pictures has finished its CinemaCon presentation, and in it, the studio shared a first look at the film with the audience. Here’s a description of the footage.

“The first trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil sees a man trapped in an abandoned city filled with zombies,” writes DiscussingFilm. “One scene sees the protagonist running through a street as zombies throw themselves off the roof.”

“RESIDENT EVIL trailer finds Austin Abrams entering an abandoned home to make a call, but the phone is dead,” adds TheInSnieder. “He then realizes that wherever he is, shit is fucked up, and he’s gotta run for his life. The trailer plays with the off-hook tone sound. This fall comes a new era of evil.”

Here’s BrandonDavis‘ recap: “In the #CinemaCon footage, a guy is on the phone trying to call his girlfriend, urgently apologizing for getting disconnected earlier. ‘I’m in like a seriously fucked up situation right now.’ He thinks they might not get to talk to each other again. Monsters and scares start flashing across the screen, slowly at first and then more quickly as a dial tone makes it feel even more urgent. A big blob of a pale monster is unveiled through light, limbs crawl out of a door frame, and the scares and terror culminate with him running through a city’s street and bodies leaping off of a building to erupt like bloody bombs landing on cars around him. Looks freaky. Looks good. Looks in line with Cregger’s great previous work.”

Sony also provided Dread Central with the official synopsis:

From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger comes a thrilling—and terrifying—reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise.

In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival, as one fateful, horrifying night collapses into chaos around him.

Look for Resident Evil in theaters on September 18, 2026.
