Eli Roth Still Eyeing Another Trip Back to ‘Cabin Fever’

Younger horror fans probably don’t know this, but it was a really, really big deal when Lionsgate released Eli Roth‘s horror debut Cabin Fever in theaters back in 2003.

Not only was it a big hit that paved the way for James Wan’s Saw to get a theatrical release a year later, but it was also one of the catalysts (alongside Haute Tension, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Freddy vs Jason, and Wrong Turn) that moved horror away from PG-13 teen slashers and back into the grimy, hardcore R-rated days we were craving.

Following The Roost, Ti West would take the reigns on the sequel Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009), and in 2016, Travis Zariwny would direct a critically-panned remake.

In December 2023, Roth said that he intends to develop another Cabin Fever movie; stating that he felt like he had “ignored them for too long.”

Hostel there’s a lot more to do. I’d love to go back to Hostel at some point. And Cabin Fever as well,” Roth told CinePop. “They’re a part of me. They’re like my children.”

In a new interview with Geek Vibes Nation discussing the brand new 4K UHD release of Cabin Fever, Roth said “there’s other stuff I want to continue with Cabin Fever,” indicating ongoing creative interest in the property.

In Cabin Fever, five college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals.

It wouldn’t be too hard to come up with a new take, especially after seeing how well the Evil Dead franchise is doing for Ghost House Pictures, one of the many inspirations of Cabin Fever.
