Universal Calls Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist’ for March 2027 Appointment

It looks like 2027 is going to be THE year for horror, with several enormous franchises getting sequels in theaters that year.
The power of Christ has compelled Universal Pictures to release Mike Flanagan‘s fresh take on The Exorcist in theaters on March 12, 2027.
Rumored to be titled The Exorcist: Martyrs, the next entry will star Scarlett Johansson and “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe.
Flanagan is writing, directing and producing the newest installment for Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, which has been described as a “radical new take” on the property.
The movie is a Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment production, in association with Red Room Pictures.
Variety first reported the news, adding: “The original Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, follows a mother (Ellen Burstyn) who hires two Catholic priests to perform an exorcism on her demonically possessed 12-year-old (Linda Blair). Released in 1973, the film was a critical and commercial hit, grossing $441 million globally and garnering 10 Oscar nominations.
“In 2021, Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights for a new Exorcist trilogy. 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer brought back Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, earning $136 million at the global box office. Flanagan’s film will be set in the same universe as the 1973 film; however, it is not a sequel to Believer.”
The Exorcist franchise includes The Exorcist (1973), Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), The Exorcist III (1990), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005), “The Exorcist” (TV series, 2016–2018), and The Exorcist: Believer (2023).
