Rob Zombie Loves This Netflix Horror Film: “A fresh take on zombie cinema”

Even if you’re completely ignorant regarding Rob Zombie’s taste in film, it’s easy enough to assess that he’s a fan of zombie pictures. The shock rocker took his band name (White Zombie) and stage name from the Bela Lugosi film White Zombie. He has also long been an outspoken fan of the late, great George A. Romero’s output. So, perhaps it should come as no surprise that Zombie also holds the modern zombie feature, 28 Days Later, in high regard. In fact, he considers the film a trailblazing effort.

In an interview with Vice, Zombie confirmed that he considers 28 Days Later a pivotal offering. “I thought it was great,” Zombie begins. “I like the fact that, I don’t know how much credit [Danny Boyle] gets for it, but the zombiemania that’s going on with everyone, no one could really figure out what to do with zombie movies. Everyone was just sort of retreading what George Romero was doing. And he was the first person to come along with a fresh take on it, which came along in kind of a stagnant genre, and I never really thought of it as being stagnant until I saw that film.”

What is 28 Days Later about?

28 Days Later sees a group of animal rights activists liberating a chimpanzee infected with a nasty virus. An outbreak subsequently ensues. A month later, lead character Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens from a coma to see that the world as he knows it has forever changed.

Though Zombie doesn’t explicitly touch on it in the above exchange, it’s no great secret that the film is noteworthy for popularizing the fast zombie trope. Return of the Living Dead beat 28 Days Later to the punch on that, but the concept didn’t really take off until Boyle adopted it in 28 Days Later. Though the lumbering walking dead are surely imposing, it’s especially chilling to see a zombie giving chase.

If Zombie’s reverence for the film has you eager to revisit it, you can do precisely that on Netflix. In fact, the platform not only features the 2002 original in its current lineup, but they also have the recently released legacy sequel, 28 Years Later, available to stream.

That’s just about all that we’ve got for you at present, dear reader. Be sure to stay tuned to the site in the very near future for more streaming recommendations from your favorite genre film personalities.
