‘The Toxic Avenger’: There’s an Uncut Scene With a “Monster Dong” and it’s Making Theaters Nervous
Macon Blair’s upcoming remake of Troma’s The Toxic Avenger is giving people what they want…an uncensored look at Toxie’s monster dong. While that’s enough to convince me to buy a ticket … cue the sickos meme … theaters don’t seem as keen on the equal-opportunity nudity.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the unrated cut of The Toxic Avenger, releasing later this month, has theater chains nervous. The version has even been deemed “unreleasable” in the past.
By all accounts, Blair’s remake delivers on the wild, take-no-prisoners humor of Troma. The film was a hit at Fantastic Fest 2023. In his review for Dread, Drew Tinnin referred to The Toxic Avenger as “a gooey, gory, bloody affair“. That’s all Toxie fans needed to get us excitedly waving our mops in the air. But what has screened at festivals so far is only the “R” version. No one has seen Toxie, er, fully unleashed.
In the outrageous scene causing a stir, Toxie solves one mess and creates another by using his radioactive piss to free himself from the film’s villains. Think of it like peeing on someone when they get stung by a jellyfish. You gotta do what you gotta do, sometimes.
Here’s the thing…in this age of the anti-sex in movies crowd, we need Toxie’s dong. If only to remind us that people fuck. That goes for monsters, too. I’m tired of characters being treated like plastic Barbie Dolls that “don’t do that”. The hand-wringing over sex in film has me feeling like we’re in the Demolition Man universe, where sex only happens in the mind. Loosen up, theaters! Audiences demand Toxie dick. After all, as Bloody reminds, releasing the unrated cuts of the Terrifier films in theaters worked out just fine.
If anything, it’s clear that Blair’s The Toxic Avenger is letting it all hang out with Toxie. Consider me thrilled.
