Don’t Make Her Drink Alone Again: ‘Ma’ Sequel Is Officially In Development At Blumhouse

Ma is back. Yes, she’s back, as announced earlier today at Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s Business of Horror event. Of course, Octavia Butler will return to reprise her iconic role that launched a thousand memes (although it seems like the studio execs didn’t quite understand why those moments became memes in the first place).
There’s currently no confirmed release date or attached director.
In a statement announcing the sequel, Jason Blum said, “Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”
The first movie, directed by Tate Taylor (The Help) and written by Scotty Landes, grossed more than $60 million at the worldwide box office against a reported $5 million budget.
In the original film:
A lonely middle-aged woman befriends some teenagers and decides to let them party in the basement of her home. But there are some house rules: One of the kids has to stay sober, don’t curse, and never go upstairs. They must also refer to her as Ma. But as Ma’s hospitality starts to curdle into obsession, what began as a teenage dream turns into a terrorizing nightmare, and Ma’s place goes from the best place in town to the worst place on Earth.
While the film has earned quite a reputation online, it earned middling reactions from critics upon its initial release, with Ma currently sitting at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In Dread Central’s review of the film, Anothy Arrigo wrote,
“Ma feels like the first draft of a script that never got around to deepening its mysteries and tightening up its core group of characters. Spencer is dependable as always, but even she can’t carry the entire film on her own. The warped finale only serves as a minor wake-up to the ennui that precedes it.”
Keep an eye on Dread Central for more updates on the Ma sequel as we have them!
