Mike Flanagan “Absolutely Loved” This Record-Breaking Horror Blockbuster

Ryan Coogler’s hit horror film Sinners is having a moment right now. The flick is a bona fide success with box office receipts and rave reviews to prove it. The film even has an impressive collection of high-profile supporters. In fact, celebrated filmmaker Mike Flanagan is among them. Not only did Flanagan add Sinners to a Letterboxd list featuring his favorite horror movies, he also penned a glowing review for the flick.
Here’s an excerpt from his Letterboxd critique: “WOW – absolutely loved this. Terrific performances, some truly jaw-dropping music sequences (that first one at the juke joint is an all-timer), and the vampires are just a metaphorical wrapper for a story about racial and cultural identity, appropriation, and legacy.”

That is quite the endorsement, moreover, it comes from a man with a proven track record and a knack for crafting memorable content.
In addition to praise from Flanagan and countless other high-profile creators, the film also holds the distinction of setting several impressive records. For one, Sinners stands as the first horror film to achieve an ‘A’ rating via Cinema Score.
In case you’re not overly familiar, a Cinema Score is an aggregate rating pulled from a collection of exit polls conducted by a market research firm. Films are ranked on an A through F scale, helping gauge audience reactions to whatever is currently playing at the multiplex.
Cinema Score has been notoriously hard on horror since its inception over 40 years ago. A handful of horror films, including The Lost Boys, Get Out, The Conjuring and a select few others have managed to secure an ‘A-‘ rating from Cinema Score. Yet Sinners marks the very first of its kind to score a proper ‘A’ rating. Huge congrats to Coogler for achieving what many previously assumed impossible.
In addition to its record-setting Cinema Score, Sinners also holds the record for the biggest Easter weekend debut for an R-rated movie. Not to mention, the film recently secured its status as one of the 10 highest-grossing horror films of all time. Not a bad run, not by a long shot.
It will be interesting to see how the film will fare once it hits subscription-based VOD streaming. I assume the flick will only continue to break more records when it does.
If you’re eager to experience this record-breaking film for yourself, it is still playing in theaters. Additionally, Sinners will be available on premium VOD beginning June 3rd.
