The #1 Film on Prime Video Is A Twisty, Long-Awaited Sequel
Fans of Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor love the film’s twisty narrative and the way it deftly blends thriller tropes with comedic overtones. The 2018 film left off with an ending that seemed to suggest there was more story to tell, and as it turns out, there is. The follow-up, Another Simple Favor, was announced way back in 2022, and fans have been eagerly anticipating it ever since. With the film finally available on Prime Video, subscribers have been watching the flick en masse, driving it all the way to the top of the charts. Not only is the film the most-watched feature on the platform, but it’s also the most-watched title overall, regardless of format.
The setup for Another Simple Favor is this: Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) agrees to travel to Italy to be the maid of honor for the devious and cunning Emily Nelson (Lively). However, she soon suspects Emily’s goodwill is part of an elaborate plan for revenge.
This much-anticipated sequel has big shoes to fill. The original is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and pulled in $97,628,717 at the global box office. Now, we know that the follow-up is performing well financially in its first week of release, with a strong showing on the streaming charts.
But what are the critics saying? That’s a different story this time around. The sequel currently sits at an approval rating of just 65%. That’s still fresh as opposed to rotten, however, the overall reaction has been less enthusiastic this time. While there have certainly been some complimentary critiques, some critics have been more pointed, accusing the second outing of functioning as a tired rehash.
You don’t have to listen to what critics are saying; you can catch the film on Prime Video now and draw your own conclusions. And I’d suggest you do just that. I haven’t gotten around to this one as of writing, but it remains a top priority. I’m an unabashed fan of the original, and I can’t wait to see what Feig and company have in store for us this time.
Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively return to reprise their roles as Stephanie and Emily, respectively. Henry Golding also returns as Emily’s ex, Sean. The returning cast members are joined by a handful of new characters, including Allison Janney as Emily’s aunt. Additional cast members include Andrew Rannells, Elizabeth Perkins, Bashir Salahuddin, Michele Morrone, and Elena Sofia Ricci.
