Plane Drops Frozen Excrement Through Unsuspecting Homeowner’s Roof: “My head was only about 12 or 15 feet away” [Horror IRL]

If you’ve ever flown anywhere, you’re familiar with airplane lavatories. Like a recreational vehicle, commercial jets keep waste contained onboard, mixing the sewage with a blue disinfectant chemical that helps keep things as sanitary as possible. At high altitudes, the unsightly mixture of human excrement and disinfectant freezes and turns into what those in the aviation business call ‘blue ice.’
It’s unheard of for an aircraft to dump the contents of its waste tank mid-flight. In fact, that simply doesn’t happen. It’s in a sealed container. However, a faulty hose or an undetected leak may occasionally trigger the unintentional offloading of small amounts of debris to the earth below. A Canadian schoolteacher recently learned more than she presumably ever wanted to know about this very rare phenomenon last month.
36-year-old Stephanie Moore was staying with her mother in Nepean, Ontario (about three kilometers from the Ontario Airport) after returning from a trip to Cuba. She was awakened by a loud crashing noise around 2:00 A.M. When she leaped out of bed to investigate, she was more than a little surprised by what she found.

Moore exited her bedroom to find a hole in the adjoining hallway ceiling. “My head was only about 12 or 15 feet away,” she explained to CBC. Underneath the new ceiling hole, Moore discovered bits of wood, insulation, drywall, ceiling materials, and water. The next morning, she further investigated, discovering the hole was about one meter in diameter.
A roof inspector assessed the damage, surmising that the cause was likely falling blue ice. The specialist ruled out a meteor strike, a wayward tree branch, and various other possibilities after assessing the scene.
Moore did a cursory search of flight plans during the time of the incident and found that a DHL courier plane was overhead around the time of the incident.
Transport Canada is aware of the mishap and issued the following statement:
“The department takes all reports of possible debris coming from aircraft very seriously. Every reported incident is investigated by Transport Canada officials.”
