Mike Flanagan Loves This Found Footage Sequel—And It’s Streaming Now For Free

Rec 2

Mike Flanagan has a taste for found footage films. That much is clear from the Absentia director’s Letterboxd profile. His activity on the social media platform for cinephiles makes it abundantly clear that he appreciates first-person POV horror films. Flanagan even keeps a Letterboxd list of his favorite horror films, which contains multiple found footage titles. Among his picks is the unhinged found footage horror Rec 2.

The second installment in the Spanish-language found footage series comes from the same directorial team behind the first—Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The duo wrote the screenplay for the inaugural franchise outing alongside Luiso Berdejo. For the sequel, they teamed up with Manu Díaz on the script.

Rest assured that Mike Flanagan isn’t the film’s only fan, dear reader. Not by a long shot. Dread Central’s Mike Cameron reviewed the flick back in 2009, saying: “It’s scary and very clever, effective and frightening for reasons that go beyond the filmmakers’ very real skill with the camera and the timing of scares, screams and busted-down doors. A lot of its effectiveness is down to the very real atmosphere of dread that they are able to create both with solid, smart set design and to their choice to inject a little bit of magic, a little supernatural spookiness, a little eldritch-ness back into the zombie genre.”

This trailblazing found footage sequel sees “a doctor and a SWAT team enter a quarantined building where a virus has turned the residents into a pack of ravenous monsters.

Interesting aside: Rec screenwriter Luis Berdejo spent some time in the Portland area a few years back while he was penning a screenplay. As luck would have it, he worked out of the coffee shop where I used to work part-time. We connected over horror movies, and I ended up interviewing him for Shock Till You Drop.

Where can I watch Rec 2?

If Mike Flanagan’s fondness for Rec 2 makes you anxious to seek out the film for yourself, we’ve got you covered. Rec 2 is available to stream on Tubi for free (with ads, of course) as of the publication of this post.
