Guillermo del Toro Calls This Twisted Christmas-Set Erotic Thriller “Hypnotic”; Now it’s Streaming
I am a die-hard enthusiast of Kubrick’s cinematic output. His films entertain on the surface, yet most have a deeper message. His cinematic creations contain themes and commentary that we will be mining and interpreting for years to come. Eyes Wide Shut is among my favorites of the director’s oeuvre. It’s a very different kind of Christmas movie.
The themes about fantasy making a marriage stronger and desire as a natural part of human nature resonate with me. The narrative is thrilling and the cinematography is breathtaking. The persistent use of Christmas lights gives the film a warm glow that makes the world within appear endlessly inviting.
That’s enough about my take on the film. A fine gentleman called Guillermo del Toro also counts himself a fan of the picture and my understanding of cinema pales in comparison to his. The Crimson Peak director once tweeted about Eyes Wide Shut, championing the film as a somewhat underrated effort from Kubrick. His tweet reads: “Two Kubricks I find myself revisiting often are two that were not well-loved upon release: Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut. Hypnotic.”
I think hypnotic is a perfect word for the film. The look and feel of the picture are enchanting and intoxicating. I think many people have come around to the flick in the 25 years since it first bowed in cinemas. Some probably missed a lot of the deeper themes on their first go-around. I know I did.
