Stephen King Calls This Free to Stream Horror Movie a “Wonderful adaptation”
Most of us have cut the cord and replaced cable TV with a collection of streaming services. What’s amusing to me is that we’ve gone from endlessly channel surfing to endlessly scrolling for something to watch. The technology is new. But the anxiety over investing in something you may not dig is still there. We feel you. That’s why Dread Central frequently runs content spotlighting streaming recommendations. The seal of approval from a trusted creator helps take the guesswork out of what to watch. Today, we have a streaming pick from none other than Stephen King.
When the BFI asked King to pick 8 films that make him tick, he fired back with some exceptional selections. Amongst his picks is a critically acclaimed picture that’s currently available to stream for free. I’m talking about the 1957 chiller Night of the Demon.
King provided the following caption with his selection: “Although it’s old school, I love Jacques Tourneur’s Night of the Demon, a pretty wonderful adaptation of M.R. James’s story, ‘Casting the Runes’. Tourneur was a disciple of Val Lewton, which means the horror here is pretty understated, until the very end.
Where can I stream Night of the Demon?
If King’s enthusiastic endorsement has you game to seek out Night of the Demon, you’re in luck. You can find the flick streaming on Tubi (free with ads) as of the publication of this post.
Jacques Tourneur (Cat People) directed Night of the Demon from a script by Charles Bennett and Hal E. Chester. As King mentioned, they adapted the screen treatment from a short story by M.R. James.
The setup for this Stephen King-endorsed chiller goes as follows:
American professor John Holden (Dana Andrews) arrives in London for a conference on parapsychology only to discover that the colleague he was supposed to meet was killed in a freak accident the day before. It turns out that the deceased had been investigating a cult led by Dr. Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis). Though a skeptic, Holden is suspicious of the devil-worshiping Karswell. Following a trail of mysterious manuscripts, Holden enters a world that makes him question his faith in science.
That’s all we have for you at present. Stay tuned for more streaming recommendations from your favorite cinematic luminaries as we uncover them. If you’re itching to keep up with my comings and goings, head over to Threads. I am on the platform as @FunWithHorror.
