Extreme Queer Horror Short ‘The Power Of The Strike’ Comes to Beyond Fest

The Power Of The Strike

Writer and director Dima Barch’s second film The Power of the Strike is coming to this year’s Beyond Fest! The neon-soaked queer thriller Barch’s second film to play at the festival, with his first film Dead End playing at the 2022 edition of Beyond Fest.

Hailed by Dread Central as “one of the most promising filmmakers to hit the scene in recent years”, Barch fled Russia in 2021 to escape persecution for speaking out against their draconian policies, especially regarding the queer community.

The Power of the Strike is inspired by the anxiety of fleeing, alienation, and vulnerability of a queer person as the Other, as well as by the works of George A. Romero, Brian De Palma, Gregg Araki, Carter Smith, Panos Cosmatos, and Joe Begos.

Barch said,

“Beyond Fest is such a big thing for me not only as an alumni (their programmers discovered me as an international filmmaker two years ago) but also as a queer horror filmmaker in danger. In our Puritan times, the room for writers and directors such as Gregg Araki with his punk approach to cinema, or the over-stylish Brian De Palma, is so small. Being highlighted by the People’s Republic again is a dream come true moment!”

Vitaly Zaytsev was the film’s director of photography. Daniel Lazarev produced the film with Anatoly Sergeev, Tomas Roldan, and Denis Kozhaev serving as co-producers.

The Power of the Strike plays on September 28, 2024 at 4 PM in the Los Feliz Theatre as part of Beyond Fest. The film will have its online premiere on SCREAMBOX this October.
