‘Mind Body Spirit’ Trailer Wants You To Take A Nice, Deep Breath

Mind Body Spirit

Influencer horror is a growing subgenre that, while trying to tackle a changing digital world, often paints people who look to content creation for work as lesser. These films often regard their influencers as two-dimensional figures who represent everything wrong with the world. But painting with so broad a brush makes those films quickly boring and vapid. But co-writers and co-directors Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda wanted to subvert that expectation in their new found footage film Mind Body Spirit.

Using yoga and spiritual practice as their background, Henes and Merenda craft a film that instead of looking down on influencers, more subtly critiques a world where people monetize hobbies and interests. It’s scary, 100%, and also a surprisingly poignant look at what it means to be a millennial in 2024.

Read the full synopsis below:

Mind Body Spirit follows Anya, an aspiring yoga influencer, as she embarks on a ritual practice left behind by her estranged grandmother. What starts as a spiritual self-help guide quickly evolves into something much more sinister. As Anya becomes obsessed with the mysterious power of the practice, she unwittingly unleashes an otherworldly entity that begins to take control of her life — and her videos. Now Anya must race to unlock the truth before her descent into madness threatens to consume her mind, body, and spirit.

Mind Body Spirit had its world premiere at the 2023 Chattanooga Film Festival, where Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews first saw the film. In her review, she wrote,

“On the surface, it may seem like another influencer horror, but really, Mind Body Spirit is an effective contemporary piece of found footage that subtly captures the horrors of being a millennial.”

The film is joining the ranks of influencer found footage like #chadgetstheaxe where the filmmakers aren’t just trying to make fun of content creators. Yes, these two films are incredibly different, especially in tone, but they both respect their characters to a degree that makes each feel more genuine in their approach.

Sarah J. Bartholomew, Madi Bready, and KJ Flahive star in the upcoming found footage film.

Mind Body Spirit comes to digital and VOD on May 7, 2024, from Welcome Villain.
