New York Man Convicted in ‘Dexter’-Inspired Murder Case [Horror IRL]

Dexter murder

A New York man whose crimes were reportedly inspired by the Showtime series Dexter has been found guilty of murder.

The Guardian reports that Cory Martin has been convicted in the 2018 death of Brandy Odom. Martin was working as a pimp with Odom and his coconspirator Adelle Anderson participating in sex work at his behest.

In 2017, Martin and Anderson took out multiple life insurance policies in Odom’s name (without her knowledge or consent).

Anderson testified in court that Martin watched Dexter in preparation for the murder because he was “looking for ways to commit the crime when he got rid of Brandy.” Anderson additionally admitted that she and Martin watched the true crime series The First 48 as they were planning to kill Odom to collect on the life insurance policy.

In April of 2018, Martin strangled Odom in the home they shared. After the murder, he dismembered the victim in a bathtub with the entire room covered in plastic. After dismembering her corpse, Martin dumped Odom’s remains in Brooklyn’s Canarsie Park.

US attorney for the eastern district of New York, Breon Peace, made the following statement after Martin’s conviction: “It is fitting that Martin faces a mandatory sentence to spend the rest of his life in prison for this ghastly, cold-blooded crime that was motivated by greed and executed after extensive planning.”

“Martin saw the victim as a moneymaker, trafficking her for commercial sex, then after killing her with his bare hands, tossing out her slaughtered body parts like trash so he could profit from her death.

“Brandy Odom suffered an unthinkable death at the defendant’s hands, but her life mattered and I hope that this verdict holding the defendant responsible brings some measure of closure to her family.”
