Forgotten and Underrated Stephen King Remake Is Now Free To Watch

David Carson’s television remake of Stephen King’s seminal horror text Carrie might be less of a remake of the source material and more of a remake of Brian De Palma’s 1976 feature film adaptation. Still, for an entire generation of horror fans (myself included), it’s a touchstone horror text.

While its wild ending never materialized into a television series (the made-for-TV movie was pitched as a backdoor series pilot), I’m always eager to revisit it as a dish of millennial comfort food. If you’re interested in doing the same, you can. 2002’s Carrie is now streaming on Tubi.

Per Tubi: An adaptation of the classic novel. Carrie, a girl with telekinetic powers, teaches her classmates a deadly lesson when they humiliate her at prom.

While modern horror fans might have forgotten Carson’s television remake, I sure haven’t. That’s mainly on account of its sensational cast. Angela Bettis is a remarkable Carrie, going toe-to-toe with Sissy Spacek’s performance in the original. While the rest of the movie might be a glossy retread of what’s come before (and come better), Bettis is eminently watchable.

The supporting cast, too, is a veritable ensemble of early aughts faces, including Emilie de Ravin, Katharine Isabelle, and Tobias Mehler for any Sabrina the Teenage Witch fans out there (me). While it was a critical and commercial flop when released, it still merits reconsideration as an interesting time capsule and another Stephen King project that could have been (someone call Development Hell).

Below, you can check out some standout tweets about 2002’s Carrie:

What do you think? Do you plan to catch the remake of Carrie on Tubi? As long as we’re on the subject, what did you think of Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins where I’m always down to talk both hidden Tubi gems and Stephen King!
