Quentin Tarantino Recommends Legendary Thriller that’s Now Free to Stream
Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema Speculation is brimming with commentary from the enthusiastic filmmaker. Within the pages of the tome, he champions beloved classics and under-seen gems alike. We’ve shared several of the director’s picks here in the past and we’re back with another recommendation sourced from its pages today.
This latest pick is a crime thriller featuring the iconic Steve McQueen. It features a legendary chase scene that is perhaps only rivaled by The French Connection. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m talking about Peter Yates’ neo-noir actioner Bullitt.
Tarantino is clearly a fan of this one, taking care to praise McQueen’s screen presence. “Rarely in the entire history of Hollywood movie stars being movie stars has a movie star done less and accomplished more than McQueen with this role in this movie,” says Tarantino. “As great as McQueen could be, this is the role he needs to be remembered by. Because it’s in this role he demonstrates what he could do that Newman and Beatty couldn’t. Which is just be.”
If you’re keen to check the flick out, head over to Tubi, where it is currently streaming (as of the publication of this post).
The setup is as follows: Senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) is aiming to take down mob boss Pete Ross (Vic Tayback) with the help of testimony from the criminal’s hothead brother Johnny (Pat Renella), who is in protective custody in San Francisco under the watch of police lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen). When a pair of mob hitmen enter the scene, Bullitt follows their trail through a maze of complications and double-crosses. This thriller includes one of the most famous car chases ever filmed.
