We gave you a preview of the haunts at Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare, and Dread Central ventured back out to the Fairplex in Pomona, CA, for the red carpet and opening night festivities.
The black t-shirt crowd came out in full force along with several celebrities from the music and film industry for a night of mazing and music in a dark carnival set-up. Among the familiar faces were Devil’s Rejects actor Lew Temple, Powerman 5000’s Spider One and, oddly enough, personalities from the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” who served us gory versions of vegan cupcakes (!).
First is the Lords of Salem maze, a total blackout sensory deprivation experience where we were forced to traverse a maze with black bags over our heads. The signature music track from “The Lords” blared throughout while shifting floors and electric shock-walls keep you in your toes. Some found it terrifying, others found it annoying, while others chickened out at the “Pussy Exit” right from the start. While I would have loved a little more variety in the sensory tricks, I thought it was a pretty effective maze.
Next is El Superbeasto in 3D, a psychedelic maze where viewers enter via a giant vagina while go-go dancers scream at you. Politically incorrect sexual jokes abound in this one, and even though none of us had seen the movie, we giggled like junior high school kids throughout every dumb innuendo.
The final stop is House of 1000 Corpses to do Captain Spaulding’s Murder Ride. The longest and best maze by far took us through endless real-life murder set pieces from Lizzie Borden to Son of Sam with numerous Corpses characters along the way. A lot of innovative pop-outs, animatronics and gore were on hand, and this maze alone is worth the price of admission.
