This Beguiling New Series is “Skin-Crawlingly Nasty”

hulu the curse

Oscar-nominated director Christopher Nolan recently shared how he felt Nathan Fielder’s and Benny Safdie’s The Curse was unlike anything he’s ever seen on television before. It truly is. It’s impossible to describe the show sufficiently, what with the way it shifts genres and form and probes some truly uncomfortable questions. It’s been something of a phenomenon since it first premiered back in October. If you’ve missed out, the series is now available to stream on Hulu via Showtime.

Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Hulu: Whitney and Asher Siegel are a newlywed couple struggling to bring their vision for eco-conscious housing to the small community of Española, N.M. But their efforts are complicated by an alleged curse and an eccentrically flawed reality TV producer, Dougie, who sees opportunity in their story. As the series unfolds, the couple find themselves caught in a mysterious web of ethical and moral gray zones – all while trying to keep their relationship afloat and conceive a child.

While I haven’t finished it yet (no spoilers), it was undoubtedly one of my favorite watches from last year. Emma Stone delivers what is arguably her greatest performance ever, cementing herself as one of the most fearless, visionary performers of her time. And, of course, Nathan for You’s Nathan Fielder is on an entirely different level. This is what television should be about, folks, and if you haven’t had a chance to check it out, I’d urge you to do so.

If you aren’t going to listen to just me, check out what fans have been saying about the series online:

Expectedly, the reception is mixed. Those kinds of titles, I find, tend to be the most exciting. No one just likes them. It’s love or hate, a masterpiece or a dumpster fire. No matter where you might land, The Curse is worth checking out (and worth the cost of a Hulu add-on if you’re not already subscribed).
