Ultra-Indie Daily Dose: Out of CTRL Is An Existential Turing Test Terror
Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!
Welcome back to another Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! Our game today is a bit more focused on existential horror than a goblin or ghoul. But the Out of CTRL demo by developers @ESzanton, @n0t_cameron, @ajknollmeyer, @kgtole, and @samloveskirby is just as intriguing and unsettling as any other great indie horror. Especially for a text-based game where you can only copy and paste.
Out of CTRL takes place on the monitor of a strange computer. The protagonist stumbles across and boots it up the machine, only to find that the machine is overjoyed to finally get some company. Unfortunately, the keyboard is busted, and all the buttons available are CTRL, X,C, and V.
You converse with the computer, generally just by throwing keywords back at them, and the computer gets to know you a bit better. However, before long, the computer seems like it knows you a bit too well. Out of CTRL ends just as it’s getting really good—it was, after all, a 48-hour game jam product—but a new, fuller sequel is on the way.
